On January 20, 2025, Mr. Ahmed SENHOURY, Executive Director of PRCM, welcomed Honorable Deputy Samba DANG, Vice-President of the National Assembly of Senegal, for an official meeting. This meeting took place within the framework of the technical and financial support provided by the Regional Partnership for the Conservation of the Coastal and Marine Zone in West Africa (PRCM) to the Alliance of Parliamentarians and Local Elected Officials for Environmental Protection in West African Coastal Countries (APPEL). The primary objective of this alliance is to enhance environmental governance in the region’s coastal and marine areas.
In the seven PRCM member countries, national networks of parliamentarians dedicated to environmental protection are linked to APPEL. PRCM plays a key role in strengthening parliamentary networking around marine and coastal conservation issues.
During the meeting, Honorable Samba DANG requested PRCM’s support for organizing the General Assembly of the Network of Parliamentarians for Environmental Protection in Senegal (REPES). He also advocated for PRCM’s assistance in holding a parliamentary panel on the International Treaty for the Protection of the High Seas and Marine Biodiversity (BBNJ).
Dr. Ahmed SENHOURY reaffirmed PRCM’s commitment to creating a space for dialogue, exchange, and experience-sharing among parliamentarians and local elected officials at the regional level. This commitment was further reinforced by the Nouakchott Resolutions of September 25, 2024, which expanded APPEL’s geographic scope to include additional West African coastal countries: Liberia, Togo, Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, and São Tomé and Príncipe.
With this strengthened dynamic, PRCM remains dedicated to mobilizing decision-makers for more effective and sustainable environmental governance in West Africa.
