The Regional Partnership for Coastal and Marine Conservation in West Africa (PRCM) took part in the 14th Trilateral Governmental Conference held in Wilhelmshaven, Germany, from 28 to 30 November 2022.

On the sidelines of this conference, PRCM signed, along with five new partner organizations, the vision of the Wadden Sea Flyway Initiative (WSFI) that aims to conserve and protect migratory water birds and their habitats along the East Atlantic Flyway. In his speech on this occasion, PRCM Director Ahmed SENHOURY recalled the importance of migratory birds that depend on a network of sites and provide essential resources. He also stressed the need for the conservation and management of the flyway at global level.

“In the East-Atlantic Flyway, PRCM member countries have a major responsibility in conserving their coastal zone and the migratory water birds flocking there for six to eight months a year,” he explained.

Other signatories, such as the Hamburg Minister for Environment, Climate, Energy and Agriculture, Jens KERSTAN, also stressed the importance of other aspects of large-scale interactions.

“The Wadden Sea World Heritage Site is of paramount importance for the migratory birds that breed, rest and winter in this area. Their protection can only be ensured if we join our forces along the flyway from South Africa to the Arctic”, he said.

In order to strengthen the existing close partnerships, a new action plan has also been signed in support of the existing Memorandum of Understanding between the Banc d’Arguin National Park and the Common Secretariat of the Wadden Sea.
