During the scientific symposium on biodiversity organised by the MAVA Foundation from 8 to 10 May 2023 in Dakar, PRCM presented a new White Paper on Coastal and Marine Biodiversity in West Africa. Ecosystems and Emblematic Species. The presentation of this landmark publication took place during a ceremony attended by around a hundred African and European researchers and Lynda Masson, Director of the MAVA Foundation, which financed it as part of the PRISE project (Reducing the Impact of Coastal Infrastructures). PRCM is one of the implementing partners of this project.
The white paper takes stock of biodiversity in coastal areas and other regions of West Africa and makes the initial reassuring observation that a large number of marine and coastal species are in good health. However, the results for other species are worrying. A huge effort is therefore needed in terms of research, information, and advocacy. According to Ahmed Senhoury, Executive Director of PRCM, “we need to join forces and pool our resources to take care of [these species] together and pass them on as a legacy to future generations”.
The publication of this white paper comes at a time when global initiatives increasingly come into existence to raise awareness of both the value and vulnerability of marine and coastal biodiversity. By focusing on these issues, PRCM aims to inform, educate, and raise awareness among policy makers and financial partners about the benefits of conservation and the importance of their support. This is particularly important as over 35% of West Africa’s population lives along the coast and the countries of the region rely primarily on natural resources for their food security and economies. The destruction of marine biodiversity is therefore also a concern for food security and socio-economic well-being
