Guinea joins FITI

On November 28, 2022, the Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Economy of Guinea, Her Excellency Mrs. Charlotte DAFFE, announced in a letter to Dr. Valeria MERINO, President of the FiTI International Council, the Government’s public commitment to joining the Fisheries Transparency Initiative (FiTI).

“To guarantee the sustainability of our maritime resources and to allow fishing to keep playing its role as a driver of growth, the Guinean government attaches a particular importance to good fisheries governance based on the principles of transparency and inclusive participation of state and non-state actors. So, the Government hereby undertakes to initiate the process of joining FiTI and will quickly put in place the legal framework and the necessary bodies towards ensuring a successful and sustainable implementation of the FiTI standard,” she said in the letter.

This decision makes Guinea the eighth country to declare its intention to join the FiTI Initiative, after Mauritania, Seychelles, Senegal, Cape Verde, Madagascar, São Tome and Príncipe and Ecuador.

With this commitment, the Guinean government is setting a milestone for the FiTI implementation process in the country.

PRCM Director Dr. Ahmed SENHOURY commended this decision, which according to him came to reward our efforts in accompanying Guinea in this process.  As was the case for Mauritania, which had joined FiTI by becoming the first country in West Africa and the Arab world to join, PRCM is committed to supporting the Guinean government in the process of joining FiTI. Several awareness and information workshops on transparency have been organized and attended by members of the government, Civil Society actors and fishing professionals. To begin the process, Guinea plans to appoint a FiTI Senior National Officer by the end of December 2022 to oversee the process
