Presse release : Senegalese Parliamentarians Strengthen Their Knowledge for Coastal Protection and Sustainable Natural Resource Management

Dakar, February 17, 2025 – The Network of Parliamentarians for Environmental Protection in Senegal (REPES), with the support of the Regional Partnership for Coastal and Marine Conservation (PRCM) through the WACA project, is organizing a panel discussion on Thursday, February 20, at the National Assembly. This event will focus on the challenges and issues related to the resilience of the Senegalese coastline and the preservation of its natural resources.

This initiative follows the resolutions adopted during the General Assembly of the Alliance of Parliamentarians and Local Elected Officials for Environmental Protection in West African Coastal Countries (APPEL), held in Nouakchott in October 2024. These resolutions notably encourage the creation and strengthening of national parliamentary networks in PRCM member countries.

The objective of this meeting is to provide Senegalese parliamentarians with a deeper understanding of environmental challenges related to the coastline and to strengthen their role in establishing appropriate regulatory frameworks. Discussions will cover key topics such as the International Treaty on the Protection of the High Seas and Marine Biodiversity (BBNJ), the Fisheries Transparency Initiative (FiTI), and the crucial role of parliamentarians in adopting and ratifying laws and treaties that promote integrated and sustainable management of Senegal’s marine and coastal resources.

Through these exchanges, parliamentarians will gain enhanced tools and knowledge to fully exercise their legislative and oversight responsibilities. Their strengthened engagement will enable them to rigorously monitor government actions and initiatives dedicated to the protection of the West African coastline.

This initiative aligns with the ongoing efforts of the APPEL network, which is actively engaged at the regional level. It also adheres to the provisions of the Additional Protocols of the Abidjan Convention, aimed at fostering cooperation for the preservation and sustainable development of the marine and coastal environment in West and Central Africa.

The Regional Partnership for Coastal and Marine Conservation in West Africa (PRCM)—whose vision is to promote a healthy and productive marine environment for the well-being of West African populations—is a strategic partner of REPES in implementing its action plan.
